About Searching

The texts of all documents referenced by Catholic News Network are indexed by IBM's GTR-34 search engine, providing full-text Boolean searching throughout the system. Searches may be conducted through all documents or be limited to documents within specific categories. A search box is provided on each documents page.

Advanced Boolean search terms may be used, including:

  • Separate multiple words by AND, OR, NOT, for example, dog AND cat
  • Enclose phrases in double quotes ("), for example, "United Nations"
  • Use wildcard characters, for example, search* (finds searching)
  • Use parentheses to build logical Boolean formulas
Both a full database search and a search within a category cover documents referenced in the Catholic News Network system going back to May 1, 2006.

Search results are displayed in order of relevance with documents most closely matching search terms presented first. A small box next to each result depicts its degree of relevance - the darker the color of the box, the more relevant the document to the search terms. Searches automatically include word variants, so that a search for "verse" will produce a result for "verses."
