All one needs to do is to click into a handful of Catholic diocesan web sites to see how the Internet has clearly emerged as a significant communications platform for the U.S. Catholic community. The more than 175 diocesan websites – joined by those of each state’s Catholic Conference – are full of rich, meaningful content, much of which is added or refreshed on a daily or weekly basis. Add the web sites of the Vatican and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the array of Internet-based dynamic information sources for the Catholic community is both vibrant and growing.
St. Thomas University (Miami) is pleased to be able to utilize special proprietary technology to index the dynamic content on these Catholic web sites on a nearly real-time basis and funnel links to a central source serving, in effect, as a virtual "town square" for news, bishops’ writings, spiritual reflections and related documents. It is our hope that this continuously refreshed collection of source documents will supplement the already robust sources of Catholic news, such as the much admired Catholic News Service.
In addition to synthesizing this dynamic information to centralized information streams, the Catholic News Network system applies the content to a powerful Boolean search engine, creating a searchable repository. This repository will continue to grow beginning with documents posted on May 1, 2006 or later.
We hope that Catholic News Network will serve the Catholic community as a cutting edge information resource and help advance the use of the Internet as an exciting information instrument in the furtherance of God’s work.
